Recently I tweeted that 2014 had been a pretty bad year for games. A few people were surprised at this, but honestly every time I looked at any list of best games of the year I felt decidedly underwhelmed.
So by way of explanation, here is a long list of games that I don’t consider games of the year, and why:
Bayonetta 2 – I don’t own a Wii U, haven’t played the first game, and I’m not a huge fan of super-hard beat ‘em up games anyway. I played Devil May Cry 3 and I feel like maybe that’s all I need?
Dark Souls 2 – Still haven’t finished Dark Souls 1. I have a weird relationship with Dark Souls games, there’s a lot of good things about them, but I’m not sold about the central conceits of hard difficulty, repetition and lack of exposition or purpose.
Mario Kart 8 – I don’t own a Wii U. It’s Mario Kart. I’ve played Mario Kart lots of times. It’s probably alright, but it’s hard to get particularly enthusiastic about.
Super Smash Bros – See Mario Kart.
80 Days – I don’t own an IOS device. It’s coming out on Android soon though and I will get it when it does.
Desert Golfing – I don’t get it. It’s a golf game. It’s alright. Golfing is a dumb word.
D4 – I am still convinced people saying good things about Deadly Premonition are participating in an enormous practical joke at my expense.
Destiny – *long sigh*. I’m not a huge fan of Halo. I found it kinda repetitive and the story was rubbish. Everything I heard about Destiny sounded even more repetitive and with an even worse story. Pass.
Sunless Sea – I like this! But it isn’t finished yet.
Broken Age – See Sunless Sea.
Monument Valley – It’s alright. Doesn’t lean on its key mechanic hard enough.
Hoplite – Once I’d finished it a couple of times I didn’t see much point continuing.
Wolfenstein – I probably should’ve played this after the surprisingly good reviews (like I did Mordor). Instead it went into my ‘pick it up on sale next year’ list.
Alien Isolation – I’ll get this when I feel like I can handle a 25 hour survival horror game (not my favourite genre anyway). So probably next summer. When it’s light out.
Legend of Grimrock – I haven’t played enough of it yet.
Endless Legend – See Legend of Grimrock.
Hearthstone – I don’t play Blizzard games anymore because they always leave me incredibly dissatisfied. I also dislike playing head to head games with randos. And e-sports. And grinding.
Invisible Inc – Both unfinished and I haven’t played enough of it.
Jazzpunk – It was okay, good even, but not really game of the year material for me.
Elite – Sorry mate, you’re not gonna be anyone’s GOTY if you come out on the 16th of December.
The Evil Within – I never really got the appeal of Resident Evil, so I’m not terribly interested in its spiritual successor.
Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes – See The Evil Within. Never really got the appeal of MGS.
Shovel Knight – A love letter to an era I have no real affection for. Pass.
Dragon Age and Shadow of Mordor were good though.
Did I miss something out? Tweet me and tell me what you think the best game of the year was and I’ll explain why I’m just not that into it.
